Most marketing agencies write their cold calling script once and never touch it again. That's the problem. A script isn't a document — it's a hypothesis about how a prospect will react, and it should get better every week you're on the phone.
Start with the objection, not the pitch
Agencies selling to agencies (or to any business owner) run into the same handful of objections: "we already have someone for that," "send me an email," "we're not looking right now." A script built around your pitch falls apart the moment one of these comes up. A script built around handling these objections first, then pivoting into the pitch, holds up on real calls.
Before you write a single line of opening pitch, list the five objections your team hears most often. Everything else gets built around handling those well.
Write for the ear, not the eye
A script that reads well on paper often sounds stiff on the phone. Short sentences. Contractions. Pauses where a real person would pause. If you wouldn't say it out loud to a friend, a prospect will hear it as a script being read at them — and they'll disengage.
Test against real outcomes, not opinions
The biggest mistake agencies make is deciding a script isn't working based on gut feel after a handful of calls. A script needs volume before you can judge it — enough calls that you're looking at a real qualification and booking rate, not noise from three unlucky conversations in a row.
- Track qualification rate and booking rate separately — a script can qualify well but still lose the close, which tells you where to focus revisions
- Change one variable at a time — the opening line, the objection response, or the close — so you know what actually moved the number
- Revisit the script every time your offer, pricing, or ideal client shifts, not just when booking rates drop
Build in revisions from day one
Scripts that never get revised go stale the moment your offer changes. Treat the first version as a starting point, not a finished product, and plan for a short review cycle after the first couple hundred calls.
